The epidemiology of fatalities reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System 1990-1997 (2001)

Peer-Reviewed Study · Silvers LE, Ellenberg SS, Wise RP, Varricchio FE, Mootrey GT, Salive ME · January 1, 2001

Review of 1,266 fatalities reported to VAERS July 1990-June 1997; median age 0.4 years. Nearly half of reported deaths were attributed to SIDS. The decline in VAERS death reports after 1992-1993 tracks the general-population SIDS decline after Back to Sleep — which the authors read as coincidental, not causal.

The trend of decreasing numbers of deaths reported to VAERS since 1992-1993 follows that observed for SIDS overall for the US general population following implementation of the 'Back to Sleep' program… coincidental and not causal.

Abstract (PDS 10:279-85)

Review of 1,266 fatalities reported to VAERS July 1990-June 1997; median age 0.4 years. Nearly half of reported deaths were attributed to SIDS. The decline in VAERS death reports after 1992-1993 tracks the general-population SIDS decline after Back to Sleep — which the authors read as coincidental, not causal. The specific figure in the book — 'over half of SIDS cases in VAERS within 3 days of vaccination' — is not what this study reports; it reports the share of VAERS deaths attributed to SIDS, not a 3-day timing distribution. See MMD-31 for the later series.
