Protocol Media does not collect or store your data.
  • This page runs only in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us. No account, no tracking.
  • Your answers are saved on this device only, so you can come back. "Clear everything" erases them.
  • The AI doesn't need your name or street address, only your ballot and district numbers. If your sample ballot shows your name, blacking it out is optional, for your own privacy with the AI.

Informed Vote Protocol

Write down what you stand for once. Then let an AI research every name on your ballot and score each one against your own values, with sources. No more voting for people you know nothing about.

Know who you're putting your name next to.

Don't vote the party line out of habit. Don't vote off an attack ad built to make you angry. This tool lines up your values against each candidate's actual record (their own words, votes and actions, with links), so you see the pros and cons before you sign on the line. Not after.

It takes about an hour. You'll binge a season of a show without thinking twice. These people make decisions about your money, your rights and your kids for years. Give them an hour.

Which AI to use: this matters most

You run the research in two AIs: one researches (Run 1), a different one checks it (Verify). We tested 11 AIs on real ballots. These combinations gave the best Vote Cards:

Never used one of these? Making a free account takes about a minute: sign up with your email or phone number, tap the code they text or email you, and you're in.

Best results (paid)
  1. Run 1: Kimi (paid)
  2. Verify: Claude (paid) or Perplexity

Kimi gave the best single run. Claude was the strongest checker.

Best free
  1. Run 1: ChatGPT, with Think turned on
  2. Verify: Perplexity, in Computer mode

Also good: Grok for Run 1, then Perplexity to verify.

Never check with ChatGPT or Grok. ChatGPT won't mark ✅/❌ and Grok approved everything without really checking. Skip Gemini, Meta AI, Copilot, DeepSeek and Qwen: they skipped races, quit partway or got facts wrong. Free plans have limits, so using a different AI for each step also helps.

STEP 1 OF 5

Get your exact ballot first

Everything depends on this step. Your county makes a sample ballot for your exact precinct, with only your races on it. With it, the AI spends all its effort on your 10 to 20 races and digs deep. Without it, the AI guesses across the whole county (every district, every write-in) and every answer comes back thin. We learned this the hard way in testing.

Get your official sample ballot (about 5 minutes):
  1. Find the office that runs your elections. In most of the country it's your county: the County Clerk, County Elections Office, Board of Elections, Registrar of Voters or Supervisor of Elections (the name depends on your state). In a few states (like Michigan, Wisconsin and New England) it's your city or town clerk. Some big cities have their own election board. Don't know your county? Search "[your ZIP code] county".
  2. Search "[your county] county sample ballot" or "[your county] county voter lookup". Use the official site: it usually ends in .gov or is linked from your county's website. Skip ads and sites that ask you to pay or sign up.
  3. Enter what it asks for, usually your name and address. That's fine: it's your county, and it already has them from your registration. None of it goes into the AI or to Protocol Media. Says "no results"? Every county's site is different, and many are picky. Try entering less: last name only, and the street name without the house number, N/S or St/Dr/Ave.
  4. Open Sample Ballot. It shows every race, judge and question you will actually vote on.
  5. Download the sample ballot PDF (or take screenshots of the whole thing). Most sample ballots show only your precinct. If yours shows your name or address, blacking it out is optional but recommended (it keeps it out of the AI chat). Keep the file handy: you'll attach it to the AI in Step 5.

Still can't get it? In this order:
1. Your state's voter registration lookup (search "[your state] voter registration lookup"). Many link your sample ballot, and they list your precinct and district numbers.
2. Ballotpedia's sample ballot lookup: correct federal, state and legislative races for your address, but county races only in large cities. Pick "Vote411 or another summary" below and the AI adds the county races.
3. Call your county clerk. They'll tell you where it is.

No ballot file? Other options
Just races and names. Don't copy your name, address or voter ID.

Also fill these in. State, county and election date are always needed. Your sample ballot shows your district numbers at the top or in the race names; copying them here helps the AI double-check.

STEP 2 OF 5

What is your creed?

A few lines, in your own words, about what you believe and what you expect from the people who govern you. When a candidate never states a position on something, your creed is how their record gets judged.

Examples. Tap to add, then edit.
STEP 3 OF 5

Where do you stand?

Open any topic you care about. Pick how much it matters, then write your position or tap an example. Skip anything you don't care about. Examples come from every side, so pick what is true for you.

0 topics set
STEP 4 OF 5

Your dealbreakers

A dealbreaker is a position so important that a candidate who crosses it gets flagged at the top of your vote card, no matter how many other boxes they check. You get 3, and only 3.

Why only 3? Almost no candidate agrees with you on everything. Pick ten dealbreakers and every name on your ballot gets flagged, which tells you nothing. Three forces you to name what you truly will not compromise on, so the flags mean something. Mark them inside any topic in Step 3.

None yet. Open a topic in Step 3 and tick "Dealbreaker".
STEP 5 OF 5

Get your prompt

Your profile and ballot are dropped into the Informed Vote Protocol prompt. First pick how you'll run it. The better the AI tool, the better the results.
