Measles, mumps, rubella vaccination and autism: a nationwide cohort study (2019)

Peer-Reviewed Study · Hviid A, Stellfeld M, Wohlfahrt J, Melbye M · March 5, 2019

Danish nationwide cohort of 657,461 children born 1999-2010 followed to Aug 31, 2013; 6,517 autism cases. Fully adjusted hazard ratio for autism after MMR vaccination: 0.93 (95% CI 0.85-1.02). No increased risk in subgroups defined by sibling history of autism, autism risk factors, or other vaccinations. Funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Danish Ministry of Health.

The study strongly supports that MMR vaccination does not increase the risk for autism, does not trigger autism in susceptible children, and is not associated with clustering of autism cases after vaccination.

Abstract (Ann Intern Med 170:513-20)

Danish nationwide cohort of 657,461 children born 1999-2010 followed to Aug 31, 2013; 6,517 autism cases. Fully adjusted hazard ratio for autism after MMR vaccination: 0.93 (95% CI 0.85-1.02). No increased risk in subgroups defined by sibling history of autism, autism risk factors, or other vaccinations. Funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Danish Ministry of Health. A published comment on the paper (Crosby) was itself retracted; a critical letter by Mawson was published. Funded by independent Danish sources, not vaccine manufacturers.
