Failure to Escape Traumatic Shock

Peer-Reviewed Study · Martin E. P. Seligman and Steven F. Maier · May 1967

Dogs previously exposed to yoked inescapable shock showed substantial interference with later escape learning. The authors interpreted this as learned helplessness: learning that responding and shock termination were independent.

We have proposed that S learned as a consequence of inescapable shock that its responding was independent of shock termination, and therefore the probability of response initiation during shock decreased.

Dogs previously exposed to yoked inescapable shock showed substantial interference with later escape learning. The authors interpreted this as learned helplessness: learning that responding and shock termination were independent. Bearing on the claim: supports. Verification note: This supports the original behavioral finding and theoretical interpretation; R1-04 documents the later reversal of that mechanism.
