The effects of social media abstinence on affective well-being and life satisfaction: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Peer-Reviewed Study · Nassen et al. · 2025

Ten studies, N=4,674 and 38 effect sizes, produced nonsignificant pooled results: positive affect g=0.03, negative affect g=−0.01, and life satisfaction g=0.03. Interventions were mostly short, adult-only, heterogeneous, and had variable compliance.

The analyses revealed no significant effects of social media abstinence interventions on positive affect, negative affect, or life satisfaction.

Abstract

Ten studies, N=4,674 and 38 effect sizes, produced nonsignificant pooled results: positive affect g=0.03, negative affect g=−0.01, and life satisfaction g=0.03. Interventions were mostly short, adult-only, heterogeneous, and had variable compliance. Supports weak or null average abstinence effects on the measured outcomes, not proof that every detox intervention is ineffective.
