Studies of Independence and Conformity: I. A Minority of One Against a Unanimous Majority

Peer-Reviewed Study · Solomon E. Asch · 1956

Across 123 critical subjects, Table 3 reports a mean error rate of 36.8% on critical judgments; 24% made no errors. Most critical responses remained independent, and public yielding does not by itself demonstrate private sensory denial.

The action of the majority distorted one-third of the reported estimates, in contrast with errors of less than 1 per cent under control conditions.

Across 123 critical subjects, Table 3 reports a mean error rate of 36.8% on critical judgments; 24% made no errors. Most critical responses remained independent, and public yielding does not by itself demonstrate private sensory denial. Bearing on the claim: partly supports. Verification note: The official APA PDF would not open; the complete monograph was opened through the archived full-text copy. The 36.8% figure concerns responses, not the percentage of people conforming at least once.
